After a long morning of emptying closets and bringing about 25 bags of clothes to the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Laconia, I was very excited to be able to drive over to The Community School Garden in Tamworth, to pick up my second weekly CSA share.
This week features more of the greens that make up the great bulk of most gardens here in New Hampshire, even this late into July. Check out the chard and kale, some romaine and leaf lettuce, broccoli, radishes, scallions and arugula! I also picked some flowers and basil while I was there. It was a great trip to the gardens.
Surprisingly, The Community School is the closest of the farms in my area that offer a CSA. For whatever reason, the idea has been slow to catch on around here, but I hope that other farms begin to think about offering shares.
On my way home, I stopped at Ledgewood Farm’s shop to supplement my CSA veggies, with some ugly tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots for a great salad, along with really great smelling sandwich onions. These guys always seem a little ahead of everyone, as they are big time greenhouse users. They’ve had tomatoes for quite a while, thankfully! I’m also happy to report that a non-greenhouse crop was spotted here today - small, but pretty ears of super-sweet corn! If my dinner was going to be at home tonight, you can bet I would have tried a few, but alas, I will wait to buy some when I’m ready to cook it!
I’ll post some recipes that I use to dispatch of this marvelous bounty in my kitchen!
In the news, check out this mention of a USA Today article about Country of Origin Labeling from Marion Nestle’s site.
