Okay, so I know it’s not super-creative, and it doesn’t even use up any of the squash on my dining room table, but this week’s entry for Dark Days is simply good. Classic burger, oven fries and fresh broccoli – why the heck not?

And, with the exception of the salt, pepper, Worcestershire Sauce and olive oil, it was all mighty local!
- Potatoes, onions – Moulton Farm, Meredith, NH
- Broccoli – Ledgewood Farm, Moultonborough, NH
- Ground Beef – Rock Farm, Wolfeboro, NH
- Bakery Roll – Heath’s Grocery, Center Harbor, NH
It’s nice to continue to be able to enjoy some fresh vegetables, like broccoli, this late in October. We’ve not yet had a killing frost, so the good people at Ledgewood have been keeping their doors open as they have goods to sell, even though they’re officially closed for the season. If they’re at the shop doing work on the building itself, they’ve been opening the doors and selling squash, cucumbers, broccoli, and even some fall raspberries!
I realized that I haven’t posted my own rules for this challenge. Here’s a start, but they are subject to modification as the challenge moves forward, since this is my first year trying to eat locally in these fall/winter months.
- We’ll eat at least one 90% local meal each week (and post it!)
- I will seek out (and post) new sources for local food as my old standbys close up for the season.
- I’ll hold at least one dinner party before the new year that focuses on local foods (I might waive the 90% rule for this).
- I will catalog what I’ve put up for the winter so that I can plan better for next year.
I look forward to seeing what others around the country are eating, and what everyone’s doing with their own giant stores of squash! Thanks, Laura for the impetus!

I have not had lunch! I saw this pucture and hit my head against the monitor..you should do contests to go eat to your house ha!
Can I come over for dinner? Our local meal this week was leftovers from our party…
